Biography

Prof. Dr. Murat ASLAN — Biography

Prof. Dr. Murat Aslan completed his undergraduate studies in Finance at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Hacettepe University, in 1993, ranking first in his department and faculty. He received his M.A. degree in Economics from The American University in 1997 and his Ph.D. in Economics from George Mason University (USA) in 2004, with a dissertation titled “Three Essays on Structural Economic Problems and Applied Model Construction for Turkey” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Daniel E. Houser.

He began his academic career as a research and teaching assistant at George Mason University and served as a faculty member at the Department of Public Finance, Eskişehir Osmangazi University, between 2004 and 2011. In 2011, he joined Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University (AYBU), Department of Economics, where he was promoted to full professor in 2017. He chaired the Department of Economics between 2018 and 2020 and has been serving as Department Chair since 2022.

In addition to his academic duties, Prof. Aslan has held various positions at the Center for Iranian Studies (IRAM) in Ankara, serving as Director of Economic Studies since 2016, Director of Security Studies since 2020, and Vice President between 2018 and 2022.

Prof. Aslan’s articles have been published in numerous national and international journals, including Quality & Quantity, Resources Policy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Applied Economics Letters, and Romanian Journal of Economic Forecasting. He has also contributed chapters to academic books published by prestigious publishers such as SAGE (2016) and Palgrave Macmillan (2018).

His recent research focuses on machine learning–based economic modeling, nonlinear dynamics in macroeconomic policy, and economic resilience under sanctions. His recent paper titled “The Russian Resilience Against Sanctions: The Roles of Proactive Policies and External Geopolitical Factors” (2025) exemplifies this current line of inquiry.

He has supervised numerous M.A. and Ph.D. theses and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including Turkish Economy, World Economy, Econometrics, Political Economy, Panel Econometrics, and Middle East Economy.

He is fluent in Turkish and English (C2) and has an elementary proficiency in Persian
