Biography
Born in 1979 in Konya, Turkey, Yılmaz NİKBAY completed his primary, secondary, and high school education in his hometown. Building on the technical foundation he developed during his secondary education, he enrolled in 1997 at Niğde University, Aksaray School of Physical Education and Sports, Department of Physical Education Teaching, and graduated in 2001. Throughout his professional career, he has developed a multifaceted expertise spanning physical education, emergency management, search and rescue, and firefighting.
In 2006, Yılmaz NİKBAY began his professional career at the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department, where he served actively in the field while also working as an instructor at İBİTEM (Istanbul Fire Training Center), sharing his professional knowledge and experience with the next generation of firefighters. In 2010, he joined the Konya Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department, undertaking responsibilities at various levels, including Firefighter, Corporal, Training Officer, and Fire Chief. Additionally, he served as Underwater Search and Rescue Team Leader, earning the titles of 3-Star Diver and Demonstration Diving Specialist, and played an active role in numerous search and rescue operations.
Alongside his fieldwork, between 2016 and 2020, Yılmaz NİKBAY served as the President of the Search and Rescue Training Center (AKEM) at the Konya IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation, where he also led underwater, mountaineering, urban search and rescue, and K9 search and rescue teams. During this period, he conducted numerous trainings, drills, and humanitarian projects that gained attention at both local and national levels and contributed significantly to raising disaster awareness.
Transitioning from field experience to academia, Yılmaz NİKBAY has been teaching vocational courses such as Firefighting Principles, Search and Rescue, and Advanced Diving at institutions including Selçuk University, Necmettin Erbakan University, and Konya Kozağaç Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School since 2010. Throughout his teaching career, he has guided numerous students and adopted an educational approach that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical experience.
In 2023, he achieved his long-standing academic goal by being appointed as a Lecturer in the Civil Defense and Firefighting Program at the Department of Property Protection and Security, Social Sciences Vocational School, Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University. His academic work focuses on innovative approaches in disaster management, fire safety, diving techniques, first aid applications, and firefighting education.
Throughout his career, Yılmaz NİKBAY has also led social responsibility and public awareness projects. In 2017, he gained national media recognition for the project “Introducing Children with Disabilities in Konya to Underwater Activities” and actively participated in projects such as the 120-meter building descent in memory of the July 15 Martyrs and diving activities in Kaş, Antalya.
Currently continuing his duties at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University, Yılmaz NİKBAY aims to transfer his field knowledge and experience to academia and contribute to the training of qualified personnel in disaster awareness and emergency management.
He is married to Specialist Dietitian Demet Nikbay and is a father of two children.
