Abstract:

Analytical verb structures are morpho-syntactic grammatical elements, consisting of an auxiliary verb connected to the main verb with verbal suffixes. Although the Turkish language is classified into agglutinative languages, it provides a quite rich source on using lexical units in conjugation. This study is based on the analytical verb structures acting as a single unit in the sentence forming and have various manner of action, time, appearance and modality functions in the sentence. Selecting the analytical verb term independently from other concepts and terms in the literature (compound verb, periphrastic structures, descriptive verbs etc.) originates from this term's having not only the ones built with a specific verbal type but also covering the forms built with verbal + auxiliary verb manner. The term of analytical verb does not make a specific or implicit proposition about verb combinations. The auxiliary verbs, constituting the main components of analytical verb structures, are selected from certain areas of meaning and then become a part of verb conjugation and derivative morphology after various phonetic, semantic, and syntactic losses. This case, allowing the auxiliary verbs a broader use opportunity, would be presented in this study within the scope of grammaticalisation. Classifications made by Johanson (2000, 2016) would be based on for categories of manner of action and aspect-time when providing semantic values of analytical verb structures. In addition to the classifications made by Johanson, manner of action and aspect-time values appropriate for functional contents of verb combinations would be discussed by referencing different approaches and views (theoretical approach of Kuteva (2001) for avertive gram and Viberg's (1984) approach for trial manner of action). The classification made by Palmer (2001) would be based on for modality and functions of analytical verb structures would be emphasized. In this study, the work of Evliyâ Çelebi named after Seyahatnâme, written in the Ottoman Turkish period of 17th century, which is an important period for following the historical course of Turkish language, would be used. The grammatical functions of the analytical verb structures in this work would be discussed and the criteria to be used in the classification of these structures would be investigated. Revealing the diachronic development of Turkish in terms of analytical verb structures would contribute to a better understanding of historical texts. Keywords: analytical verb structures, Evliyâ Çelebi's Seyahatnâme, manner of action, aspect, modality.
