Özet:

Nigeria’s internal peace and security situation has continued on a downward trajectory since 2010. Notwithstanding the government’s efforts to address the problem, the increased presence and activities of  armed non-state actors and cybercriminals have continued to cause damage to many lives and property, thereby killing and displacing many. In this regard, the research aims to investigate failures in addressing internal security challenges in Nigeria since 2010.

The study identified Nigeria’s system of state security administration as falling short in terms of both provision and regulation of the security provision by non-state security actors. Furthermore, the data indicated Nigeria’s approaches to internal security challenges such as terrorism, to be more reactive and less proactive which has long terms implications for internal security. According to the data, there appears to be insufficient coordination and collaboration among non-state security providers in Nigeria. Findings further indicated that there is inadequate regulation and oversight of non-state security actors in Nigeria.

The work adopted a qualitative inductive analysis research approach to analyze the data obtained from primarily secondary data sources. Data collection was guided by a thematic analyses technique to help organize the data into themes related to the research subject for better analysis and the work further relied on security governance as a guiding framework.

Furthermore, it was concluded that, revisiting the country’s security administration and governance structure to be able to better accommodate the security needs of residents in Nigeria would go a long away as far as internal security is concerned. Secondly, strengthening capacities of security institutions and agencies to better adapt to the evolving nature of emerging threats to internal security would help in better addressing the problem. And lastly, more proactive approaches that would address internal security challenges in the long run by tackling the root causes would be suggested.
