Abstract

This article examines the Trump administration’s technological measures towards Chinese companies, with a specific focus on the Chinese telecommunications giant, Huawei. Through this case, the article investigates how technological measures were implemented in the context of the great power rivalry between the US and China. It illustrates the rich variety of measures and the state bodies involved in the sanctioning process. Finally, the article concludes that the technological measures towards Huawei were at least moderately successful from at least two aspects: First, the US could influence the target company financially and force it to restructure its operations organizationally. Second, the US could use these measures within the wider context of bargaining with China.
