Özet

Cellular communication systems in maritime environments face challenging conditions due to the considerably long signal transmission distances in open sea scenarios and the shadowing effects encountered in regions with dense infrastructure and structural elements such as ports. Next-generation communication technologies, such as sixth-generation (6G) systems, aim to address these challenging connectivity conditions in maritime environments. In this context, high-altitude platform stations (HAPS), considered within the scope of non-terrestrial networks (NTN), have the payload capacity to host relay systems for maritime communications. In this study, the performances of relay approaches deployed on HAPS, namely decode-and-forward (DF) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) relaying, are compared under challenging maritime communication conditions including shadowing and long path loss effects. The obtained results provide important insights into the performance of DF and RIS relay systems and reveal that the use of relays in maritime cellular communication mechanisms provides approximately 8% performance improvement.
