Abstract

This study focuses on monitoring, controlling, and improving energy efficiency on university campuses, with a specific emphasis on the ISO 50001 Energy Management System standard. Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University's Etlik Campus, particularly the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Building, serves as the pilot site. We analyzed five years of energy consumption data before surveying 50 students for receiving their insights to establish a student-oriented voluntary energy management unit. Our calculations indicate that natural gas consumptions during active educational seasons have dominant effect in yearly energy consumption of the building under consideration. Thus student-active term calls the need of student’s attention and contribution into energy efficiency matter. We believe that the approach and findings presented in this study will pave a way to get students’ contribution in increasing energy efficiency in various educational buildings throughout Türkiye.
