One of the most influential figures of the 17th
century literary world, Ben Jonson (1572-1637) left his indelible stamp in such
spheres like theatre, poetry, criticism, and translation. The literary school
called Sons of Ben is marked by Ben Jonson’s importance as a figure in the
literary world. Although Ben Jonson was a successful playwright, his stance as
a prominent figure in English literature rests upon his poetry. This study will
analyse Ben Jonson’s poetry in terms of his ideas on conservatism, classicism,
and religion. In this way, under the light of these ideas, a general overview
of Ben Jonson’s poetry will be presented. This study will also analyse Jonson’s
poems “To Penshurst” and “To the Memory of My Beloved, The Author, Mr. William
Shakespeare, and What He Hath Left Us”.
