Today, social life can be seen as a common living space open to political discussion, expanded to include all the economic, social and cultural diversity that concepts such as legitimacy, democracy and human rights have brought with them along the way. Unless this living space is understood and shaped together with concepts such as participation, democracy and human rights, it carries the danger of being an element of oppression. Therefore, this book pursues an understanding of "social life" in which individuals establish equal relations with each other in terms of both public and private matters, and in this direction, an inclusive and holistic "right to participate in social life" claim. In the first two chapters of the book, the meaning, scope and limits of the right to participate in social life are discussed, starting from the theoretical foundations that became evident with the rencounter of public and private spheres. In the last part, both the United Nations mechanisms for the protection of individual rights and freedoms, which are the components of the right to participate in social life, and the specific tendencies of these mechanisms towards the protection of the right to participate in social life as a whole are evaluated.
Toplumsal yaşam, günümüzde meşruiyet, demokrasi ve insan hakları gibi kavramların geçtikleri yollarda yanlarına kattıkları ekonomik, sosyal ve kültürel tüm toplumsal çeşitliliği içerecek şekilde genişlemiş, politik tartışmaya açık bir ortak yaşam alanı olarak görülebilir. Bu yaşam alanı katılımcılık, demokrasi ve insan hakları gibi kavramlarla birlikte anlamlandırılıp şekillendirilmedikçe bir baskı unsuru olma tehlikesi taşır. Dolayısıyla bu kitap, içinde bireylerin hem kamusal hem de özel meseleler bakımından birbiriyle eşitlikçi ilişkiler kurduğu bir "toplumsal yaşam" anlayışının ve bu doğrultuda kapsayıcı ve bütüncül bir "toplumsal yaşama katılma hakkı" iddiasının peşine düşmüştür. Kitabın ilk iki bölümünde, toplumsal yaşama katılma hakkının, kamusal alan ile özel alanların çarpışmasıyla belirginleşen kuramsal temellerinden başlayarak anlamı, kapsamı ve sınırları ele alınır. Son bölümde ise hem toplumsal yaşama katılma hakkının bileşenlerini oluşturan hak ve özgürlüklerin uluslararası düzlemde ayrı ayrı korunmasına ilişkin Birleşmiş Milletler mekanizmaları hem de bu mekanizmaların toplumsal yaşama katılma hakkının bir bütün olarak korunması yönündeki belirgin eğilimleri değerlendirilir.
