Özet

Türkiye has emerged as a significant refuge for those displaced by the Syrian conflict and other regional upheavals, prompting urgent and resource-intensive responses from governmental and non-governmental actors alike. Gaziantep, due to its cultural familiarity, urban likeness, and proximity to Syria, has become a primary destination for Syrian refugees, particularly in neighbourhoods like Şahinbey Belediyesi.

This study in Gaziantep aims to uncover the challenges confronting the Syrian refugee community, with a focus on housing, liveability, and integration into Turkish society. It fills a notable gap in recent research, shedding light on the specific living conditions, sense of belonging, and housing needs of Syrian refugees.

Methodologically, this study adopts a qualitative approach, leveraging in-depth interviews with a diverse cohort of experts encompassing disciplines such as civil engineering, architecture, psychology, sociology, and economics. Through this methodological prism, the research aims to distil pertinent insights that could inform policy discourse and intervention strategies, thereby enhancing future responses to analogous humanitarian crises.

The findings of this research underscore the pivotal role of safety and psychological well-being in engendering a sense of belonging within residential settings, irrespective of the structural conditions of the dwellings. Moreover, it illuminates the nuanced interplay between architectural congruence and cultural resonance in shaping the refugee experience. Crucially, the study underscores the interconnected nature of integration, underscoring the indispensability of economic stability, social cohesion, legal frameworks, and inclusive communication channels in facilitating the assimilation of refugees into host societies.
