Reception Analysis of Cartoons on Library Theme: The Example of Nane and Limon

Abstract

The primary school age is a period in a child's development when he/she acquires knowledge, skills and habits that will shape his/her future. Since libraries are valuable resources, it is of particular importance to instil a love of libraries in this period. One of the effective ways to develop this love in the digital age is cartoons. In this study, the Nane and Limon cartoon is taken as the unit of analysis since it is aimed at primary school children among the library-themed cartoons. How children perceive the library-themed cartoon is investigated based on Stuart Hall's conceptualisation of reception analysis. The effect of the library and cartoon theme on children, children's interest in the cartoon and their identification with the characters in the cartoon are revealed. In the study, 10 primary school students are included in the sample. Questions are asked to reveal the effect of the selected cartoon on the students. Through reception analysis, the elements in the cartoon are analysed and the participants' codings of the cartoon are evaluated. This study is also important in terms of drawing the attention of researchers to the subject of library and cartoons. The findings show that children responded positively to the library theme in the cartoon and perceived the library as a pleasant learning environment. It is also concluded that the participants who identified with the characters paraphrased the codes intended to be given in the library-themed cartoon with hegemonic readings.
İlkokul çağı, bir çocuğun gelişiminde, geleceğini şekillendirecek bilgi, beceri ve alışkanlıkları edindiği bir dönemdir. Kütüphaneler değerli kaynaklar olduğu için bu dönemde kütüphane sevgisini aşılamak ayrı bir önem taşımaktadır. Dijital çağda bu sevgiyi geliştirmenin etkili yollarından biri de çizgi filmlerdir. Çalışmada, kütüphane temalı çizgi filmler arasından ilköğretim çağındaki çocuklara yönelik olduğu için analiz birimi olarak Nane ile Limon çizgi filmi ele alınmaktadır. Çocukların kütüphane temalı çizgi filmi nasıl alımladıkları Stuart Hall’un alımlama analizi kavramsallaştırmasından yola çıkılarak araştırılmaktadır. Kütüphane ile çizgi film temasının çocuklar üzerindeki etkisi, çocukların çizgi filme olan ilgisi ve çizgi filmde olan karakterlerle özdeşleşme durumları ortaya koyulmaktadır. Çalışmada ilköğretime giden 10 öğrenci örnekleme dâhil edilmektedir. Seçilen çizgi filmin öğrenciler üzerine yarattığı etkinin ortaya çıkarılmasına yönelik sorular yöneltilmektedir. Alımlama analiziyle çizgi filmde yer alan ögelerin çözümlenmesi gerçekleştirilmekte katılımcıların çizgi filme ait kodaçımlamaları değerlendirilmektedir. Bu çalışma kütüphane ve çizgi film konusunun araştırmacıların dikkatini çekmesi bakımından ayrıca önem taşımaktadır. Bulgular, çocukların çizgi filmdeki kütüphane temasını olumlu karşıladıkları ve kütüphanenin keyifli bir öğrenme ortamı olduğunu algıladıklarını göstermektedir. Karakterlerle özdeşleşen katılımcılar kütüphane temalı çizgi filmde verilmek istenen kodları hegemonik okumalarla açımladıkları sonucuna da ulaşılmaktadır.
