ABSTRACT
This study aims to analyze and compare the construction, functioning and decline of the American and British Hegemonies within a historical and theoretical framework. Both hegemonies were the architects and primary beneficiaries of the international system they constructed and maintained. Hegemony at global level can not be obtained only through the military and economic superiority over other nations. Instead, it can be achieved by constructing and operating the international institutions while ensuring the production of consent. In this regard, this study compares the construction, functioning and decline of the American and British Hegemonies by examining their similarities and differences in a multidimensional framework. The main research question of this study is: “what are the similarities and differences between the American and British Hegemonies in their construction, functioning and decline?” In order to address this question, the study focuses comparatively on the construction of the two hegemonies through their institutional structures, ideological frameworks, and economic foundations; their functioning through the exercise of power, strategies of legitimation, and instruments of global influence; and their decline through internal contradictions, external challenges, and structural transformations. The analysis and theoretical background of the research is based on and discussed within Organski’s Power Transition Theory and Hegemonic Stability Theory. A mixed research method is deployed in this study by analyzing and comparing both qualitative data (such as historical documents, ideological discourses, the establishment of international institutions, and foreign policy patterns reflecting hegemonic priorities) and quantitative data (including economic indicators, military expenditures, and trade volumes) for each hegemon within their respective historical context. The findings reveal that the two hegemonies have similar and unique features in the three phases of their hegemonies. In this context, both hegemonies supported free international trade strongly, obtained military and economic superiority over the world, and promoted their domestic cultural values to be embraced by the world. On the other hand, British hegemony was less systematic and based on colonial understanding through its companies while the American hegemony is established on more systematic and universal order through international institutions rather than direct colonization. Furthermore, the British hegemony was supported mainly by its industrial developments, cheaper production, naval power as well as its direct administration on the colonized areas while the American hegemony is maintained and supported by its superiority in technology, innovation and media in addition to the traditional superiorities such as military and economy. In conclusion, this paper contributes to the understanding of the hegemonic transformations within its historical continuity through a comparative approach, which also sheds light on the current and future transformation of the global hegemony.
