Özet
This study investigates the structural optimization of end plates in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) to enhance mechanical integrity while reducing weight. End plates are critical for maintaining uniform pressure distribution, minimizing contact resistance, and preventing fuel leakage. Various configurations, including bolted and steel belt connections, were analyzed using finite element analysis (FEA) and validated through experimental pressure distribution tests with Fujifilm Prescale films. The bolted end plate model exhibited the best pressure distribution, with a uniformity improvement of approximately 30% compared to steel belt configurations. However, it also resulted in a 66% increase in weight. A manually optimized bolted design reduced mass by up to 50%, while maintaining a von Mises stress profile close to the bulk model. Topology optimization further contributed to a 39% reduction in material usage without compromising structural integrity. Although steel belt connections provided improved pressure homogeneity, localized pressure concentration led to efficiency limitations. These findings emphasize the need for optimized end plate designs to enhance PEMFC performance, especially in weight-sensitive applications like aerospace and portable energy systems.
