Abstract
Introduction: Many studies evaluating possible hazards of anaesthetic gases on the staff have been carried, which generally focus on the fertility potentials, spontaneous abortion, genetic damage, congenital malformations, cancer, haematopoetic and physicomotor diseases and the development of behavioral disorders. In this study, the spermiogram values of the staff in the department of anaesthesia and possible changes in their seminal plasma oxidative stress parameters and the relation among the changes were investigated. Materials and Methods: The sexually active volunteer males who had been working in the anaesthesia department for at least 6 months were included in the study. The volunteers with pathologies such as varicocele, hormonal pathologies, urogenital infections and smoking, which could affect the results, were excluded. Being within the same age group and not receiving any anesthetic substance for the last 6 months, 20 fertile volunteers were selected as the control group. The semen samples were obtained through masturbation, following a 3-day sexual abstinence. Some of the samples were evaluated with respect to the WHO criteria. The plasma was separated by centrifugation of the samples for 10 minutes at 2500 rpm and it was stored at -80 °C. To determine antioxidative status of semen plasma a commercially available kit and to determine oxidative status total peroxide levels were measured. Results: The spermiogram parameters in the control and the anaesthesia group were 55.75±11.68/ 28.43±11.17, p<0.001 in density, 56.60±7.31/31.38±15.60, p<0.001 in motility and 58.25±9.75/49.75±19.31, p=0.268 in morphology, respectively. The seminal TAC and TP values in the groups were determined as 3.49±0.38, 3.52±0.41 mmol Trolox equiv./L, p= 0.702 and 39.70±4.35/38.15±7.24 μmol H2O2 Equiv./L p=0.293, respectively. Conclusion: The gonadal function disorders after exposure to anaesthetic agents in acute high dosage or chronic low doses have been defined and this situation has been associated with oxidative stress. In this study, although the sperm parameters in the males of anaesthesia department were determined to be within the normal values according to the WHO criteria, the number of sperms and motility were found to be significantly low, when compared with the control group. On the other hand, the seminal TAC and TP levels in two groups were insignificant. Disorders were determined in the sperm parameters, especially the number and motility of sperms, but it was concluded that this couldn't be explained with the seminal oxidative stress; hence, further investigation is necessary.
