Scrap choice is one of the most important parameters in steel making by an electric arc furnace (EAF) because energy use is proportional to the chemical components of scraps and molten steel. In this study, the optimum parameters of chemical component analyses of molten steel related to the amount of scrap depending on the maximum chemical reaction exergy are determined using the linear programming method for the electric arc furnace (EAF) with scrap preheating used in a steel production company. Optimum parameters and maximum exergy values with respect to the steel types are given in table and graphic, respectively. © Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.
