Özet

Virtual environments (VE) have become a widely used medium for researching multi-sensory experiences, reshaping how we design and represent architectural spaces by offering novel methodologies such as immersive experiments and virtual walkthroughs. A growing number of researchers are using virtual environments, especially virtual reality (VR), to explore how soundscapes shape spatial experience. For these studies to be effective, virtual soundscapes must correctly represent real-world auditory experiences. While visual accuracy traditionally dominates the research on virtual environments, auditory fidelity in virtual environments has also become increasingly important, strengthening the overall spatial experience. Despite increasing interest in auditory spatial qualities, research on soundscapes in virtual environments remains fragmented. Existing studies revealed that there are different perspectives on the reliability of the use of VR in soundscape studies. In addition, there is a lack of a cohesive theoretical framework to bridge differing research perspectives. This study proposes a theoretical model to define the connections between soundscapes and virtual environments, classify recent methodologies and evaluate their positive and negative aspects after a systematic review of soundscape research in VR.
