Özet
In Protecting China's interests overseas, Andrea Ghiselli addresses the most intriguing and pressing questions with regard to the country's changing priorities. China has gone from being almost exclusively focused on domestic issues of territorial integrity and internal order to an increasing focus on expanding its external frontiers. Ghiselli attempts to explain how and why China has abandoned its 1950s stance and its unwillingness to interfere in the internal affairs of other sovereign states. Today, the country has turned into a formidable force internationally: it deploys its military on humanitarian and peacekeeping missions; it uses naval power to fight terrorists and pirates; and both private and government forces are deployed to protect Chinese citizens and property abroad. Ghiselli reflects on the reasons behind China's projection of its unprecedented military power outside of its own neighbourhood. The book also covers China's instrumentalization of the general public, films, TV series and bureaucracies to protect its interests abroad. Moreover, Ghiselli looks at how leaders securitize issues such as social upheavals, terrorism and piracy. The author questions how China will protect and further its interests as it continues to grow. Finally, Ghiselli contemplates whether China will follow the example of other great powers and project its military power over a wider area.
