Abstract

Conducting empirical research in safety science has always been a hardship. This is especially true for topics such as construction or mining safety; considering the dangerous and ever-changing nature of those sites. Hence, the number of empirical research remained rather limited. Immersive virtual reality systems like head mounted displays or CAVEs offer some solutions to these hardships. This study investigates opportunities and challenges delivered by IVR systems to the safety scientists. The content of the paper includes a brief introduction to the IVR technology, discussion on opportunities and advantages of IVR to the safety scientists, along with potential challenges, technical difficulties and possible solutions to these problems.
