Abstract

Aim: The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of urinary tract infections (UTI) following voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) in our center. Material and Method: The records of 67 patients (40 females/27 males) who underwent VCUG were evaluated. Results: The median age was 12 (1-216 ) months. Eleven patients (16%) (9 females, 2 males) out of 67 were found to have UTI (Group 1). There were 56 (84%) (31females,25 males) with negative urine culture (Group 2) (p>0.05). Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) was detected in 27% of group 1 and 32% of group 2 (p>0.05). Nine out of 11 patients were on antibiotic prophylaxis at the time of VCUG. The most common microorganism was E. Coli. Results revealed that UTI may complicate as high as 16% of VCUG despite antibiotic prophylaxis. The age, sex, ultrasonographic findings, the presence and severity of VUR did not predict the development of this complication. Conclusions: We suggest antibiotic prophylaxis before VCUG.
