Özet

Concrete structures on the surface of bridges and roads in cold climate regions of the world are exposed to the

use of chemicals that act as de-icers when ice and snow accumulate. This increases the risk of damage from

chemical attack, such as alkali-silica reactions. In concrete, an alkali-silica reaction causes cracks that reduce the

durability and service life of the structure. De-icer, which is considered as an external alkali source, is one of the

factors that contribute to the increase of alkali-silica reactions. The main objective of this study is to determine

the effects of using different concentrations of de-icer in combination with sodium hydroxide on alkali-silica

reaction when using two types of aggregates. The result was determined, that the alkali-silica reaction happened

in both concentrations (2% and 4% NaCl), but with different ratios. When comparing between both

concentrations, it became clear that alkali-silica reaction was increased when mortar bars stored a solution with

high concentrations of sodium chloride, due to the increased rate of Cl and Na ions in the solution.
