This paper, which delineates the intellectual world of Byung-Chul Han, has three objectives. The first is to identify the figures who influenced Chul Han’s thinking; the second is to depict the critiques he directs at the contemporary world; and the third is to demonstrate the proposed solutions he has developed for the problems he diagnoses. Intellectually, he delivers a trenchant critique of modern society, drawing sustenance from names like Heidegger, Hegel, Nietzsche, Foucault, Baudrillard, Horkheimer, Adorno, Benjamin, Arendt, Freud, Simone Weil, Rilke, and Handke; from systems of thought such as Idealism, Romanticism, and Far Eastern philosophy; and from fields like philosophy, sociology, literature, and art. Chul Han’s critiques are fundamentally centered on the neoliberal economic system, the illusion of freedom, and the transformations initiated by digitalization. As he describes it, the earth is currently succumbing to the digital, things to the non-things, otherness to sameness, negativity to positivity, and beauty to smoothness. The things and rituals that structure time are disappearing. Everything's interiority is inverted into exteriority, secrets become manifest, and life is progressively denuded. Consequently, existence is divested of meaning. Violence becomes more immanent. Ailments such as depression and burnout syndrome are directly caused by the compulsions of neoliberalism: achievement, performance, beauty, perfection, speed, and consumption. He primarily analyzes the problems generated by the neoliberal economic system on an existential and cultural plane. The solutions he develops are framed by idealistic and romantic thought, individual ethos, and intellectual transformation. In this context, Chul Han posits these against the compulsions that govern our lives in the late-modern world—namely, digitalization, acceleration, transparency, exhibitionism, homogenization, overwork, performance maximization, constant mobility, overconsumption, the imperative to experience everything, and the compulsion to remain constantly in communication. He invites people toward serenity, silence, conscious inactivity, contemplation, concealment, distance, deceleration, lingering, revitalizing rituals, touching the earth, re-enchanting the world, strengthening relations with things, the other, and beauty.
