Özet
The construction industry plays a pivotal role in driving economic growth globally; however, it faces substantial challenges pertaining to its environmental impact. The widespread utilization of ordinary Portland cement, the primary binding material of concrete, contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and ecological degradation. This chapter focuses on exploring the potential of alkali activation as a viable solution, encompassing the development of alkali-activated materials (AAMs) that require lower energy input, emit less greenhouse gases, and utilize industrial waste materials. Additionally, promoting sustainable construction practices such as energy-efficient design and utilization of recycled materials is imperative. Waste management poses another significant environmental challenge, as construction and demolition activities generate substantial amounts of construction and demolition waste (CDW), leading to contamination and habitat destruction. Adopting a circular economy approach by encouraging the reuse and recycling of CDW materials can effectively mitigate these impacts. This chapter provides the latest research and applications in alkali activation technology, encompassing a wide range of materials including binders, mortars, concretes, 3D printable composites, engineered geopolymer composites, and insulation materials to facilitate the integration of CDW into the circular economy within the construction industry. As CDW represents a significant global environmental concern, this chapter aims to offer valuable insights into sustainable waste management solutions and the potential utilization of CDW as raw materials for the production of new-generation construction materials. This state-of-the-art chapter on AAMs is believed to contribute to the advancement of sustainable construction practices and mitigation of the carbon footprint of construction industry.
