Abstract

From Advice to Exploration: A Learning Advisor Case Study
This presentation utilizes a student's reflection on a learning advisor course to showcase the effectiveness of intentional reflective dialogue.  The student, initially motivated by personal gain and a focus on giving advice, encountered a course built on three core learning advising principles: (1) It's not about you (focus on the advisee); (2) Leave your assumptions at the door (be open-minded); (3) No judgment (be neutral) (Kato & Mynard, 2016).  Through this experience, the student's understanding of advising evolved, as evidenced by five key themes: a shift towards exploration, the value of active listening and open-ended questions, the power of silence and accompanying strategies, and the ongoing challenge of maintaining advisor neutrality.  This case highlights the transformation of advising from a technical skillset to a multifaceted approach that fosters self-directed exploration and growth in advisees.
