Özet

Microalgae have emerged as a sustainable alternative to crude-oil-based products in many areas, such as energy, biomedicine, food, chemistry, agriculture, and materials science, among others. In this study, microalgal biomass covers algal species at the micro scale, including microalgae, cyanobacteria, diatoms, dinoflagellates, and coccolithophores. Although there are many review papers on some aspects of microalgae and their applications in particular, there has not been a succinct coverage of microalgal bioprocesses and bioproducts in one paper. Thus, this chapter presents the key findings of 25 top influential papers. Then, it discusses these key findings in the broad context of the field of microalgal bioprocesses and bioproducts. It is found that the research in this field has primarily progressed in the fronts of energy, neuroscience, and, to a lesser extent, toxicology and materials science. There are a number of most prolific bioprocesses related to the applications of microalgae. These are the microalgal biomass cultivation, lipid accumulation and extraction, biomass pretreatments, transesterification of lipids, screening of biomass, liquefaction of biomass, photobiological production of bioH2 biofuels, and life cycle evaluation of biodiesel fuels. The most prolific microalgal bioproducts are channelrhodopsins, microalgal nanomaterials, biodiesel fuels, biohydrogen fuels, biooil, lipids, microcystins, and okadaic acid. The most prolific microalgal strains are Chlamydomonas, Chlorella, and Nannochloropsis. It is notable that microalgal strains are the top class of microalgae with 20 papers compared to cyanobacteria, dinoflagellates, diatoms, and coccolithophores. The other top strains are Spirulina, Microcystis, Porphyridium, Prorocentrum, and Dinophysis.
