Muallim Cevdet, an influential figure in the field of education during the transitional period from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey, constitutes the focal point of this study with his views and proposals regarding the design and functionality of school buildings. The study aims to examine educational structures in terms of physical conditions, student health, and pedagogical needs, as well as to analyze Muallim Cevdet’s multifaceted contributions to the educational reforms of the era. Employing the document analysis method, the research investigates the relationship between Muallim Cevdet’s innovative approaches—such as lo-cation selection, ground structure, air circulation, use of natural light, humidity control, and furniture ergonomics—and modern educational architecture, based on data derived from primary sources. The study is grounded in primary sources of the period, particularly Muallim Cevdet’s handwritten notebook on “Mektep Hıfzıssıhhâsı” (School Hygiene). Topics related to educational buildings in the early Republican era and contemporary academic literature have been evaluated through a comparative approach. The findings reveal that, according to Muallim Cevdet and other sources of the time, modern school architecture and hygiene developments were observed and discussed in contemporary texts during the late Ottoman and early Republican periods.
