Urfa, Hz. İsa peygamberden sonraki ilk bin yıl içinde yaşayan çeşitli mezheplere mensup Hıristiyanların gözünde dinsel bakımdan çok büyük önem arz eden bir şehir olmuştur.
Christianity, which originated in today’s Israeli-Palestinian territories and spread to the west through Lebanon and Anatolia, is described as a Jesus-centered religion by events such as the birth, life and death of Jesus, and his resurrection after death. Christianity, in the 1st century BC after. it emerged from a small sect of Judaism in the century and incorporated many of the common religious, cultural and intellectual traditions of the Greco-Roman world. There are religious concepts such as prophet, angel, hereafter and destiny in Christianity. There are religious concepts such as prophet, angel, hereafter and destiny in Christianity. Hz. In the years when Jesus was born, the Jewish people were leading their own lives under the pressure and control of Roman rule. Prophet Jesus, rightly, stood strongly on morality. The participation of Paul, who dominated Jewish culture and pagan philoso- phy after the teaching of Jesus spread beyond the borders of Palestine, brought a new breath to Christianity and caused the nullification of the Jewish Sharia. According to the Christian faith, the death and resurrection of Jesus on the cross revealed a very important aspect of Jesus. The adherents of Jesus have testified that Jesus, whom they had considered until then only as the expected Messiah and savior, had a feature far beyond these features, that he had a Divine feature by overcoming death and rising again. After the emergence of Christianity, in the first half of the 1st century BC, the kingdom of Osroene, also known as Abgar, which was founded by the Aramean people living in Northern Mesopotamia in 132 BC, reigned in Urfa. Since the name of this pre-kingdom city was Edessa, the name Edessa was also often used. Assyrians also had a dense population in the kingdom. During the periods when Christianity first appeared, pagan religions related to astrology were wor- shipped in Urfa and its immediate vicinity. Jesus the prophet, along with his first disciples, called the Apostles, traveled through the Galilee region located in the north of Israel, preaching and creating miracles. During this period, at the beginning of the kingdom of Abgar in Urfa, V. Abgar (also called Kara Abgar) was present, and this king was infected with leprosy. Because he heard about the fame of Jesus, he sends a letter to Jesus in order to find healing, and the prophet Jesus sends a letter to the king in response, and as a result of the correspondence, the king has found healing. After that, Abgar accepted Christianity, and the people of Urfa were baptized and accepted this religion. The history of Christianity mentions three important events in Urfa. Firstly, a Christian church was built in Urfa, secondly, a king accepted Christianity and released Christianity to his people, and thirdly, first of all, the Bible was translated into Syriac. The most important of these is the translation of the Bible into another language for the first time. This event facilitated the spread of Christianity over a wide area. Urfa has been the most important center of Christian thought in Mesopotamia and the surrounding kingdoms since the second half of the 2nd century BC. Urfa has been a city of great religious importance in the eyes of Christians belonging to various denominations who lived in the first thousand years after the Prophet Jesus.
