The migratory trajectory from Türkiye to Sweden that emerged in the 1960s began with individual life stories and gradually transformed into a collective memory shared by thousands. Motivated by the pursuit of new opportunities, the first generation not only forged their own futures but also contributed significantly to the shaping of Sweden’s social and economic landscape. Institutionalized through the 1967 Labour Recruitment Agreement, this mobility represents a profound shift—from temporary labor migration to enduring settlement, and ultimately from a transient workforce to a consolidated diasporic formation.
Today, the Turkish community in Sweden, extending into its fourth and fifth generations, continues to enrich the sociocultural fabric of the country through its productive capacities, educational and professional achievements, and evolving modes of belonging, while simultaneously sustaining strong emotional and cultural ties to the homeland. Bringing together the traces of this six-decade journey, this Atlas offers a comprehensive and historically grounded account of the Turkish diaspora in Sweden, illuminating its transformation from past to present and providing a holistic sociological perspective on its development.
