According to Richard Sennett, cooperation as a technical skill underlies human interaction. In
this sense, cooperation is conceived as a behaviour which people reciprocally benefit from. It
is observed in rituals related to mutual respect and empathy in complicated relations. Against
destructive forms of cooperation, Sennett attempts to describe ‘hard cooperation’ which aims
to solve conflicts between people and gives priority to communication. In this regard,
cooperation is considered as a dialogic skill which is beneficial to conflict resolution. For
Sennett, this type of cooperation can be explained with reference to the Aristotelian concept
‘techne’. Aristotle mentions techne as a part of production. To him, since production is
different from action, techne cannot be an issue related to it. Following this argument, techne
seems to be a productive skill which overlaps creativity and artistic creation. In this paper, the
relationship between cooperation and techne is examined and the possibility to conceive
cooperation as techne is discussed.
