Abstract

Allergy to beetroot, a member of the Chenopodiaceae family, has been rarely reported. Most reports are associated with beet pollen exposure and respiratory symptoms. There have been two reports of allergic reactions after ingestion. We present a patient with anaphylaxis after the first ingestion of beetroot, supported by evidence of hypersensitivity on skin prick testing. In cases of idiopathic anaphylaxis, in which the cause of the reaction is unknown, uncommon allergens should be considered.
