Abstract
Pyomyositis is an acute bacterial infection of skeletal muscle, most commonly seen in tropical countries. Staphylococcus aureus is the principal cause of pyomyositis. Although pyomyositis is a rare disorder in other areas, there is an increasing frequency to-date due to the increase in immunocompromised patients. The combination of myalgia, fever and muscle tenderness provides early evidence for the diagnosis of pyomyositis in neutropenic patients after chemotherapy. Non-invasive imaging methods, such as ultrasonography, computed tomography and gallium scanning, confirm the diagnosis of pyomyositis. Administration of antibiotics and surgical drainage during the early phase of the disease reduce dramatically the morbidity and mortality of pyomyositis.
