Özet

Microalgae have emerged as a sustainable alternative to crude-oil-based products in many areas, such as energy, biomedicine, food, chemistry, agriculture, and materials science, among others. In this study, microalgal biomass covers species at the micro scale, including microalgae, cyanobacteria, diatoms, dinoflagellates, and coccolithophores. There has not been a succinct coverage of microalgal bioprocesses and bioproducts in one paper. Thus, this chapter presents the key findings of a scientometric analysis of over 100,000 population papers and 1100 top influential sample papers. It is found that the research has intensified after 2005. Karl Deisseroth, Takeshi Yasumoto, and Jo-Shu Chang are the most prolific influential authors, whilst Stanford University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and National Center for the Scientific Research are the most prolific institutions. The top influential journals are Bioresource Technology, Journal of Biological Chemistry, and Journal of Applied Phycology, whilst the top influential countries are the United States and to a lesser extent Germany, Mainland China, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, France, and India. The top microalgal biomass are microalgae and cyanobacteria, whilst the production of microalgal biomass and lipid production are the primary processes. The microalgal toxins, bioactive compounds, lipids, and pigments are the primary bioproducts, whilst Biomedicine and Energy are the primary applications. This study showed that the scientometric analysis has a great potential to gain valuable insights into the evolution and dynamics of the research on microalgal bioprocesses and bioproducts, complementing literature reviews and content analysis.
