ABSTRACT

Mass media, in both its traditional and digital forms, has become one of the most influential domains shaping learning patterns in contemporary societies and influencing linguistic practices. Its role is no longer confined to the dissemination of information and news; rather, it has expanded to include the promotion of linguistic knowledge, the facilitation of language acquisition, and the development of communicative competence.

In the context of the Arabic language, this issue has gained particular significance in light of the challenges facing the use of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), especially with the growing prevalence of colloquial dialects and the increasing influence of multilingual digital content. Against this backdrop, the present study aims to explore the impact of mass media on learning Modern Standard Arabic and to examine its role in enhancing learners’ linguistic competence while strengthening the presence of MSA in the public sphere.

This study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach through a review of relevant literature and an analysis of the functions of various media platforms, including television channels, digital platforms, and social networking sites. Particular attention is given to the mechanisms through which media content can support the learning of Modern Standard Arabic. The study also investigates the impact of sustained exposure to standard language content on the development of core language skills, namely listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Furthermore, it highlights the role of modern interactive media in providing flexible and accessible learning environments that extend beyond the boundaries of traditional educational institutions.

The findings indicate that mass media constitutes an effective tool for promoting the learning of Modern Standard Arabic by providing diverse linguistic models, enriching learners’ vocabulary, and improving their communicative abilities. The study further reveals that digital media offers valuable opportunities for autonomous learning and continuous linguistic interaction. However, the effectiveness of this role largely depends on the quality of the linguistic content provided and the extent to which it adheres to the norms of standard Arabic.

The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of strengthening cooperation between educational and media institutions in order to harness contemporary media resources for the promotion, teaching, and preservation of Modern Standard Arabic and its status in an era of rapid communication and technological transformation.
