Özet
This presentation is about how my nearly 20 years of teaching experience transformed into a questioning process during my doctoral studies, and how, after receiving training in learning advising, self-determination theory formed the theoretical foundation of my advising experience. As I noticed the consumer-oriented attitudes of my students during advising sessions, the three fundamental psychological needs dimensions of self-determination theory—autonomy, competence, and relatedness—helped me understand their situations.
Especially in the early weeks, I gained some experiences in supporting students on how to set goals for their autonomy needs; in listening to them to increase their competence and understand relatedness; and I believe these experiences will be useful for those, like myself, who are new to learning advising. The target audience for this presentation is actually teachers and researchers who are expected to constantly deliver direct messages but have already initiated their own transformation process. Personally, I didn't start applying self-determination theory after hearing about it from a theorist; I encountered situations where self-determination theory provided the conceptual framework that answered my questions, and I was compelled to turn to it.
