Abstract

Tracheostomy is commonly performed in cases such as upper airway obstruction or chronic ventilator

dependence. Tracheocutaneous fistula (TCF) is a potential complication in pediatric patients follow-

ing tracheostomy. In pediatric patients, TCF frequently arises after decannulation and may lead to

complications such as secretion, weakened cough reflex, and cosmetic issues. The risk of TCF increas-

es with tracheostomy longer than 24 months in children. Frequently, fistulas may close spontane-

ously within 6-12 months, while large fistulas may require surgical intervention. Surgical treatments

include primary closure, flap techniques, and cartilage graft transplantation. Effective management

of TCF relies on early diagnosis, proper follow-up, and timely surgical intervention when necessary.
