Özet
The economic research on long-term care (LTC) has mostly focused on developed countries with high income per capita. Even though these countries’ economic, demographic, and cultural characteristics are not exactly the same, a common topic of the research in developed countries is that demand and supply factors of LTC will put significant pressures on the sustainability of public finances. In other words, the future financial sustainability of LTC is in jeopardy for many developed countries. While economic research on LTC in developing countries is scarce, the same conclusions are not necessarily applicable in this setting. The economic, demographic, and cultural characteristics that affect the demand for and supply of LTC services are likely to be very different in developing countries compared with developed ones. This study focuses on how these characteristics influence the demand for and supply of LTC in Turkey, a developing country. We first provide an overview of the institutional background of LTC delivery in Turkey. We then discuss what LTC’s future might look like in Turkey and compare this with developed countries.
