Dr. Karayayla received her PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Essex, UK, in 2018 on the development of Turkish as an immigrant and a heritage language in the UK. Her main topic of research is loss of the native language, also called First Language Attrition, and the development of the first language in immigrant children, called Heritage Language Bilingualism. In particular, her research focuses on the complex relationship between the languages in a multilingual mind and how this is shaped by biological and external factors.
Currently, Dr. Karayayla holds a lecturer position at the Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University, Turkey teaching various linguistic modules in the department of English Translation and Interpretation.
