Seasonal Effects of Smoking Bans on Cigarette Consumption in Turkey

In this study, we compare monthly aggregate cigarette sales (consumption) data

before and after the tobacco control policies (including non-price related) went into effect

to see the effects of these anti-smoking measures on declining cigarette consumption in

Turkey. We utilise cigarette sales as a proxy measure for cigarette consumption. Our results

indicate that the enforcement of the early law in 1996 against tobacco was too weak. As a

result, cigarette consumption increased until the 2000s. We also present results after the

public smoking regulations were implemented in 2008, which shows an immediate decline

in cigarette consumption for the adult population in Turkey.
