Abstract:

In this study, the theological views of Abū Ishāk al-Saffār's, the Māturīdī scholar, (d. 534/1139) were discussed within the framework of his interpretation of the names of Allah. 367 pages of al-Saffār's theological book called Talkhīṣ al-adilla li-qawāʿid al-tawḥīd is made up of the names of Allah. In the first part of this chapter, the etymology, meaning and conceptual differences of names, titles, qualifications and the words of musammā and tasmiya, and the theological issues such as the number of the divine names and their order in the suras are discussed. In the second part, the names of Allah are explained in alphabetical order in terms of theology. al-Saffār tried to explain godhead issues by using divine names in Talkhīṣ al-adilla at the same time, he begins the explanation of divine names by first analyzing it in terms of semantics and then interprets the divine name he studied by establishing a connection with a topic of kalām. When Saffār's book called Talkhīṣ al-adilla is examined, it can be understood that he handled other theology subjects by interpreting theological words with divine names except the issue of caliphate. The fact that there is a lack of knowledge of any other work that dealt with the names of Allah in such a comprehensive way in Hanafī-Māturīdī Kalām literature before 6th/12th centuries, the period when al-Saffār lived, has led us to do research specifically on this subject. The study consists of introduction and three parts. In the introduction part, the subject, purpose, importance, method and sources of the research and the al-asmā' al-ḥusnā literature are discussed. In the first part, information was given about the sociocultural environment in which Saffār was raised, his life and his scientific personality. In the second part, the concepts related to al-asmā' al-ḥusnā are explained, and information was given about the composition of the al-asmā' al-ḥusnā and different opinions about the number, sensation, source and classification of the al-asmā' al-ḥusnā were examined. In the third chapter, 175 al-asmā' al-ḥusnā are classified and explained in detail by taking into account the theological comments made by Saffār in the explanation of these names. In the conclusion chapter, the information acquired at the end of the study was presented and an evaluation was made regarding al-Saffār's adoption of the interpretation method of the al-asmā' al-ḥusnā. In this study it is identified that Saffār made theological interpretations in 70% of 175 al-asmā' al-ḥusnā and he interpreted all theology issues from knowledge and existence to the hereafter in connection with the al-asmā' al-ḥusnā. In addition, it was found that divine names are not associated with the subject of imamate/caliphate issues, which are directly related to politics and fiqh. These results confirm our prediction that Saffār's understanding of theology is based on the interpretation of divine names.
